A paragraph is a group of sentence dealing with a single topic or idea. The topic sentence is usually the first sentence of the paragraph. All the other sentences are related to this topic sentence. They further explain or support the main idea. It gives the reader an idea of what the paragraph is going to be about. It is like a contact between writer and reader. Readers generally look to the first few sentences in a paragraph to determine the subject and perspective of the paragraph. That’s why it’s often best to put the topic sentence at the very beginning of the paragraph. A valid topic sentence consists of two parts-Effective and Ineffective. A topic sentence should not just only state a single fact. The topic sentence should be general, but not too general. Make sure it is not too broad or too vague. This results when more than a single idea is expressed. A topic sentence may come at the beginning, as the second sentence, at the end or may be implied. In academic writing assignments, many instructors (but not all) seem to prefer that the topic sentence come at the beginning of the paragraph.
